The commonwealth realm of Mauritius, known simply officially as 'Mauritius', was a predecessor to modern-day Republic of Mauritius and an independent state that existed between 1968 and 1992. When British rule ended in 1968, Mauritius was given independence as a commonwealth realm in which form the state existed until the proclamation of the Republic of Mauritius on 12 March 1992. It was the most recent former commonwealth realm to become a republic. During the commonwealth realm phase, the British monarch remained head of state of Mauritius, and was represented in Mauritius by a governor-general. The following governors-general held office in Mauritius during the commonwealth realm period:
Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and then Sir Anerood Jugnauth held office as prime minister (and head of government) of Mauritius during this period. Following the abolition of the Commonwealth Realm, the last Governor General of Mauritius, Sir Veerasamy Ringadoo became the first President of the Republic of Mauritius.
